Matthew Thomas Costis is the son of Tom and Priscilla Costis and brother of Kaitlyn Costis. Matthew is eight and his sister is six. He loves his sister and watches out for her, and he loves his mom and dad and all of his family. I am his uncle Mark, Tom’s twin brother, and I’m writing this because to me Matthew is a miracle, and he has touched my life in a way I didn’t think was possible until I met him. He is a joy in the lives of all his friends and family.
His Uncle Andy, Priscilla’s brother, put my feelings for Matthew best: “Matthew thinks that I’m his hero, but he doesn’t realize that he’s my hero.” Matthew has an irrepressible spirit and enthusiasm for life. As Tom often says, Matthew is like the greatest audience a stand-up comedian could ever want. Once you start him laughing he will giggle for an hour, riffing on endless variations of the same joke. He has a great sense of humor ranging from completely silly to surprisingly clever for such a young boy. He explained to me why I haven’t been on a date recently: “It’s because you’re using girl’s shampoo. But they make that for girls to attract boys. You need a boy’s shampoo.” He has a knack for making complicated things seem so clear and simple.
